Many really
hard things are happening throughout this book. Poverty is a recurring theme in
Mockingjay by Suzanne Collins as well as in the entire Hunger Games series
as a whole. The districts are the object of cruelty and death in this book.
One
piece of evidence of cruelty is during the revolution when Katniss visits District
8. (Collins 86) They visit a warehouse full of wounded from fighting. “The
bombs begin to fall” (p.92) Suzanne Collins describes as Capitol hovercrafts bomb
the sick and wounded. This shows that there is no end to the Capitol’s cruelty.
Most of the people were not likely going to survive but the Capitol still
decided to bomb them.
These types of things happen a lot
in real life, just not as extreme. Many innocent people die every day in wars across
the world. One example of cruelty in real life is on 9/11. On this day many terrorists
hijacked planes to use as weapons to target important buildings in the United
States. One was the World Trade Center in New York. Two jumbo jets brought down
both towers, killing thousands of people. Many firefighters trying to save
these people died when the towers went down. Another example is from the
rebellion in Syria. The leader of the government used chemical weapons to kill
hundreds of Syrian civilians and children.
This shows that terrible things like the bombing of District 8 in the book
can happen in real life too.
This book shows us what our world
could be like in the future. Countries being divided into military districts
and violence throughout all of them such as bombings. The book also shows that
the poverty and violence that happens in the book are also happening today in
the world.
